This, my North American friends, is the facelifted Peugeot 2008, a little cute ute for active, urban whatever. When I saw this picture, my initial reaction was “Wow, neat idea!” because it reminded me of a car that was misunderstood at its time, maybe even flawed by poor build quality, but still gets the praise of being well ahead of its time.

Yep, the Matra Rancho. And I am talking about how the rear side window goes all the way up into the raised roof. They seem to have copied that with the facelift which gives a rather boring cuv a nice little twist.

But of course, it’s just a fucking piece of trim!!!!! I ain’t even mad that it’s just a trim piece, but for gods sake leave it black.

The Rancho always reminds me of the mark 1 Discovery.

The pre-facelift one had it too IIRC, however those were almost always chrome.

I really like it for being a nod to the Rancho though, especially since it is relevant with Simca/Matra(sort of)/Talbot being merged into PSA long ago. Maybe they should do a Rancho Grand Raid edition of the 2008, with offroad tires, LSD, lights, spare tyre on the roof and a winch, but keeping it 2WD, just like the original.

I don’t understand what Peugeot is doing. The hatches and wagons are great, the crossovers are horrible.

Perhaps they are of the opinion that people who buy crossovers don’t really care if the car is good or not, which would render any effort to make them any good a bit redundant.

Well, here in the Netherlands, the 3008 sold kinda great when new, but the sales seem to have dried up, and the 5008 never was that great of a seller. The 4007 was a straight failure, and the 4008 wasn’t even sold here, IIRC. The 2008 is probably the only successful x00x here at the moment. Whereas the streets are filled with all kinds of 108s, 208s, 308s and 508s. I must admit the 308 is an exception, because it is as popular as it is due to it being one of the most affordable company cars, due to its low emissions.

Mr Google tells me that the 2008 is best seller here (takes a while to find that out because you have to go a long way down the listing) followed by the 208. The 3008 is a long way back. Peugeot and Citroen have never been more than marginal sellers here.

How different markets can be. For 2015 Peugeot was #2 here, right behind VW. Citroën #8.

Markets change too. At one time Fiat were perennial no 2 here with a share of around 15% (after Ford). Then the Japanese arrived and Fiat started a long, slow decline. They’re now down to 0.4% and going nowhere as their concentration on endless variations of the 500 theme just doesn’t work here.

Interestingly, Dacia, unknown a few years ago, outsell Peugeot.

I guess the Irish are a no nonsense people. Dacia was #22 here in 2015, with a market share of 0.87%. In contrast, Peugeot had 11%, and that’s excluding Citroën’s 4.5%.

Fiat dropped here as well, but not as horrifically. They were at 2.75% in 2015.

The Discovery came after the Rancho, right? In any case, the Rancho was unashamedly an attempt at cashing in on the Range Rover’s success by offering similar looks in a much more accessible package, because underneath it’s just a normal car. It was a crossover decades ahead of time.
